INVASION OF SENSITIVE OIL
BEARING AREAS |
12. | ||
ISSUE | The F.W.O.C. has many
times over the years stated its opposition to any invasion by oil
interests into the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and other sensitive off-shore
areas. |
||
In spite of the current
situation in the Mid-East with the possible curtailment of imported
petroleum, we continue to oppose oil exploration or drilling in the
Refuge. The U.S. has oil fields in many states capable of
producing supplies now, plus reserves sufficient for present needs, as
well as supplies from friendly countries. |
|||
STATUS |
Senator Murkowski, Alaska,
has introduced an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization
bill which would permit the President to open up areas presently
withdrawn from oil development. One of the most dangerous parts
of Murkowski's amendment is its provision to permit leasing of
protected lands with no NEPA or Endangered Species Act review. It
would also negate the administration's moratorium on off-shore drilling
in sensitive areas. |
||
WHAT TO DO |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs firmly opposes Senator Murkowski's amendment and urges it
members to IMMEDIATELY communicate with their representatives in
Congress and insist that they vote against the Murkowski amendment and
any other efforts to nullify the environmental protection of the
Wildlife Refuge and sensitive off-shore areas. |
