1990 RESOLUTIONS
|
14. | BILLBOARD PROLIFERATION
RELIEF |
||
ISSUE | Billboard proliferation
has turned the scenic beauty along America's highways into visual
pollution. The Highway Beautification Act of 1965 was enacted to
preserve the scenic resources along the nation's roadways.
Initially successful, this bill has been amended to the point that it
is now little more than a billboard protection law. It is time
for reform. |
||
STATUS |
Two bills, S.2500 and
H.R.3389 have been introduced in the Congress that will ban new
billboards and empower local governments to remove existing
signs. These similar bills would: |
||
1) Enact a moratorium
on new billboard construction along federal highways.
|
|||
2) Return control
over existing billboards to the states and local communities.
|
|||
3) Stop the useless
destruction of thousands of trees on public land for the sole purpose
of improved billboard visibility.

WHAT TO DO |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor clubs supports the Visual Pollution Control Act (S.2500) and
the Billboard Control Act (H.R.3389) and urges its members to support
this needed legislation. Member Clubs are encouraged to contact
their senators and representatives to request that they co-sponsor
these bills. |
