17. | RESTORING SAN FRANCISCO BAY
AND CENTRAL VALLEY WETLANDS |
||
ISSUE | For more than 30 years San
Francisco Bay has been cherished and protected from damaging activities
by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission and the Save the Bay
Association, protection endorsed from time to time by the Federation. |
||
STATUS |
Local Congressman George
Miller has introduced a bill (H.R. 4700) whose provisions if enacted
would restore not only estuarine areas of the Bay, but also wildlife
refuges in the Central Valley. Since 1974, migratory bird
populations have fallen by 50% and anadromous fish populations by
80-90%. The bill has provisions for re-establishing these
populations, providing more water from the Central Valley Project for
wildlife refuges, and recovery of endangered species, habitat
improvement, and many others. |

WHAT TO DO |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor clubs supports the Miller Bill and urges member clubs in
California to support it by letter or phone to Mr. Miller and to
contact other California legislators for their support of H.R.4700. |
