PRESERVATION OF ESTABLISHED
TRAILS
|
||
ISSUE |
Planning activities which
include clearcuts of large areas in the national forests are
endangering established trails. Trail surfaces are often
obliterated with slash and always damaged when logs are dragged across
them, resulting in a negative aesthetic effect for trail users. |
||
STATUS |
Such abatement as has been
achieved so far has come about only through difficult and lengthy
negotiations among national forest personnel, timber industry people,
and trail users. |
||
WHAT TO DO |
Contact district rangers
and ask to be placed on lists of those who receive notices of timber
sales and notices of resource plans for each project. Meet with
the planning staff and recreation officer to urge that protective steps
be taken in areas which impact established trails. |
