1990 RESOLUTIONS
|
26. | RESOLUTION ON VIOLENCE
AGAINST MEMBERS OF EARTH FIRST |
||
ISSUE | Initiative 130 has been
placed on the November ballot in California; if enacted it would
prohibit the cutting of old growth redwood forests and mandate
sustainable logging practices on all forest lands in the state.
In fear of this initiative becoming law after the November elections,
certain logging companies are desperately trying to log all the
remaining redwoods. |
||
STATUS |
To prevent this disaster
the Earth Firsters, an organization of environmental activists, largely
young people, developed a plan of bringing activists, from all over the
nation to form barriers to this logging of old growth redwoods.
Two of their leaders on entering their automobile were severely injured
by a bomb that had been planted in the back seat. It is possible
the young woman will be crippled for life. When the police
appeared on the scene, they promptly arrested both of the victims,
claiming they had put the bomb in the car with the intention of
committing a violent act. After some time in court, the case of
the police was thrown out of court. |
||
Representative
Ron Dellums, a Congressman from California, has instituted an
investigation of this blatant miscarriage of justice. |
|||
WHAT TO DO |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs extends its sympathy to the young people who suffered
such serious injury, and also expresses its support for the efforts of
Rep. Dellums in the investigation of the police action in this affair. |
||
Copies of this resolution
and/or correspondence concerning it should be sent to the president of
Earth First and to the Hon. Ron Dellums. |
