SMALL-HYDROELECTRIC POWER
PRODUCTION |
8. | ||
ISSUE | Several years ago the
government authorized the increase in hydroelectric power plants by
favoring small-sized units with economic incentives and the requirement
that their output be accepted on the grid of the large
distributors. In some cases, the small power producers are using
small mountain streams whose alteration seriously affects the riparian
and aquarian habitat, fish and wild animals, and the aesthetic beauty
of the area. |
||
WHAT TO DO |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends that federal authorizing agencies for small
hydropower plants take greater care in meeting requirements for
protecting the ecology as well as the aesthetics and the environment of
the proposed power plant sites. Proliferation of these small
hydroplants should be significantly reduced. |
