KLAMATH/SISKIYOU
ROADLESS AREAS TO REMAIN WILDERNESS AREAS |
Roadless areas in
Klamath/Siskiyou are de
facto
wilderness areas of more than 5,000 acres. These areas have not
yet been given official protection or wilderness designation.
Many are intact drainages which are refuges of biological diversity. |
|
These steep, rugged areas
are marginal timber lands more suitable for producing exceptional wild
steelhead. They are native forests. The Siskiyou National
Forest in southern Oregon has more large expanses of unprotected
roadless areas than any other forest in the region, including 10
roadless areas near the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Under the guise
of "new forestry" the Forest Service has plans to enter virtually every
roadless area in the Siskiyou National Forest in the next 5 years. |
|
In northern California the Klamath National Forest has plans to enter the Dillon Creek roadless area, a large roadless area adjacent to the Siskiyou Wilderness. These de facto wilderness areas stand to be degraded and probably destroyed if these forest service plans are acted upon.
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs recommends that the Forest Service not enter or harvest timber in any of the roadless areas of more than 5,000 acres in any of the five national forests of the Klamath/Siskiyou bioregion.
The Federation further
recommends all roadless areas be removed from the timber base. |
