NATIONAL
FOREST PLANNING |
Political and judicial
challenges are gravely disrupting the operations of our national
forests. At present Congress is wrestling with the problem of how
to give permanent protection to old growth ecosystems and at the same
time allow sustainable harvests. In the meantime timber sales of
old growth are halted by judicial decree. |
|
It is recognized that the
national forest plans are milestones in the definition of policies and
objectives and detailed management prescriptions which give emphasis to
ecological and environmental values. At the same time it is
recognized that sustainable forestry is a legitimate use of the
national forests. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs urges that the newest forest plans be amended as
necessary to recognize the public's concern over protection of old
growth or ancient forests, the maintenance of wildlife habitat and
biological diversity in both old growth and younger forests. |
|
The Federation further
urges that ecological principles of "new forestry" or "new
perspectives" be given more extensive testing and applied where
appropriate. All forest practices should be open to
modification. The FWOC recommends continued public participation
in the planning process and strict monitoring of actions under the
Forest Plans to ensure environmental values are protected. |
