MARINE
TRANSPORTATION OF NUCLEAR WASTE |
Nuclear technology has
been sold to other nations, particularly to those of the Far East, by
the United States, to enable these countries to construct nuclear
plants for the production of energy. The spent fuel, containing
plutonium, must be returned to the United States because it is a
necessary component for the production of nuclear weapons. It is
mandated by treaty that the plutonium waste be returned to the United
States. |
|
An earlier attempt to
transport this dangerous material through Puget Sound to the Port of
Seattle for transshipment to an inland destination was frustrated when
the environmental organizations and labor resisted its entry to this
inland sea. |
|
It has been revealed that
another attempt is being made to unload ships in the Puget Sound ports. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs is on record that transportation through Puget Sound to
marine ports is unacceptable as a hazardous operation on the enclosed
waters with the dense populations of its many cities and communities
located there. |
