TRANS
MOUNTAIN PIPELINE IN WASHINGTON STATE |
The waters of Washington
State are an important resource, economically and aesthetically.
The tidal action of these waters is integrated and it is impossible to
protect only one segment from oil spills. |
|
Most oil spills are caused
by human error and the lack of double hulled tankers. The U.S.
and B.C. Oil Spill Task Force proposes numerous safety recommendations,
such as upgrading vessel traffic systems and increased tug
escorts. The Task Force also proposes serving the Washington
State refineries with crude oil from Alberta by pipeline. These
recommendations provide additional safety for oil transportation
without building a new facility in Washington State. |
|
The proposed Trans
Mountain Pipeline would involve building an oil facility and would
bring larger tankers into Washington waters. A similar proposal
was rejected in 1983. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs urges its Member Clubs to contact the Governor and
Legislature of Washington State to reject the Trans Mountain Project
near Port Angeles and set a State oil spill prevention policy which
will protect all Washington State waters. |
