FOREST AND
FAMILIES PROTECTION ACT |
The "Forest and Families
Protection Act" (HR 2463 and S 1156) was introduced by Senator Packwood
(R. OR) and Representative Huckaby (D. LA) on May 23, 1991. This
legislation is the most cynical attempt yet to exploit the plight of
those facing job loss in the timber industry by big labor and the
multi-national timber interests. They apply to all national
forests not just those of Oregon and Washington. |
|
Some of the provisions of
this legislation subordinates the values of our national forests to
timber and grazing. They require the Forest Service to "maintain
to the maximum extent feasible, the stability of any community or
economic enterprise economically dependent on a national forest".
They even restrict the rights of citizens and environmental groups to
go to court. The bill overrides the Endangered Species Act in
favor of timber production. In addition, it creates a bogus
system of "ancient forest reserves" in Oregon and Washington.
Instead of a permanent system that is favored by environmentalists the
reserves would be revised every ten or fifteen years. |

The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs strongly opposes this bill and urges its members to write
to Rep. Stallings urging him to continue his opposition to this bill. |
