THE
CALIFORNIA COASTAL TRAIL |
The dream of a trail along
the entire length of the California coastline has been around for a
long time. The need for more access to this beautiful shoreline
is apparent and is being demanded by the public. Creating the
coastal trail poses its own particular set of difficulties. It is
confined to a narrow corridor of land, the topography is difficult and
natural features block the path. Other problems such as private
ownership of some of the land, conflicting governmental jurisdictions
and many zoning laws must be dealt with. |
|
There is already a
legislative mandate for the coastal trail. In 1979, the coastal
public access program was legislated, calling for a "trail route
linking State Parks, Federal Recreation areas and other areas of ...
significance located in coastal areas." |
|
This trail is
feasible. The public already owns about half of the
coastline. Also, the tidelands mean high tideline are publicly
owned. The trail could use the lands in addition to trails on
Federal, State and Local Jurisdiction lands. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the funding by the State of California of a
comprehensive plan and the implementation of a coastal trail that will
extend for the entire California coast connecting with similar trails
in Oregon and Baja California. |
