SAGEBRUSH
REBELLION RETURNS |
Western States have been
targeted by a new anti-conservation coalition called "People for the
West". This group is an off-shoot of the Western States Public
Lands Coalition, which spearheaded the "sagebrush rebellion" and the
so-called "wise-use movement". The aim is to organize around
emotional resource issues by trading on people's legitimate fears about
the inevitable changes that are occurring. While pretending to be
a grassroots movement, it is actually heavily funded by major mining
and oil companies and others with an interest in unlimited exploitation
of the public domain. Their primary goal is to prevent any
changes in the antiquated 1872 Mining Law. This movement is
growing rapidly and is a serious threat to the true concepts of
multiple use and public ownership of land -- the basic foundations of
conservation in the West. |

The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes attempts by "People for the West" and
organizations like it to prevent needed reform of the 1872 Mining Law
and to weaken current laws such as the Endangered Species Act and the
National Forest Management Act that protect the environment in the
interest of all Americans. |
