WASHINGTON
STATE MILLER PENINSULA REDUCTION |
In the Olympic Peninsula
in the State of Washington, 1444 acres of natural resources land was
identified for development as a State Park on the Miller Peninsula in
1985. In 1987-8 the State Legislature authorized the purchase of
this land by State Parks and Recreation Commission. The
Mitsubishi Corporation under the name of Peninsula Partners, is
currently working on a deal with Washington State Parks and Recreation
Commission to buy 645 acres of the proposed State Park to convert it
for its own development, thereby reducing the public park land by 45%. |
|
The land to be removed
from park status is rare and unique waterfront property in that it
forms an ecosystem supporting birds on the adjacent U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and State Refuges on Protection Island. No
evidence has been presented of wildlife inventories on the affected
parkland. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs believes that park quality lands are in notably short
supply and it is foolhardy to remove from public ownership lands which
citizens already own, and consequently are opposed to this purchase by
a private enterprise. |
