NORTHWEST
SALMON AT A CROSSROADS |
Northwest Salmon are at a
crossroads, the signs read survival and extinction. Left to
themselves they would choose survival but they are not left to
themselves. The decline in number of salmon is precipitous.
120 years ago the Columbia Basin produced 16 million wild salmon.
Today the yield is just 4 to 7% of that. The true index of what
is gone is the loss of stocks. There are 106 major populations or
stocks of pacific salmon that are now extinct, 102 are at high risk of
extinction, 58 are at moderate risk and 54 are of special
concern. We need the seed bank of these wild stocks to replenish
the salmon population. |
|
The common threat to the
salmon is human activity, hydropower, navigation, mining, logging,
fishing and urban growth. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs urges enactment of legislation that guarantees adequate
waste supplies and mitigation programs to reverse the decline in fish
populations and restore river and wetland habitat. |
