RETURN OF
THE CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS |
The development of the
trails in the United States received a major impetus during the 1930's
with the formation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). A
similar economic situation is facing the unemployed as many of the jobs
vacated in the recent recession will not be refilled by industry.
Automation and mechanization have produced a great surplus of hand
labor. Thus, the Government might justify a return of the CCC for
a long range work program of repairing damage to the environment and
improving outdoor recreation facilities such as is being done
successfully by California. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends the reinstitution of the Federal
Civilian Conservation Corps for trail construction and maintenance and
for improvement of the environment. |
