FWOC RESOLUTION #11 |
_"WISE USE" MOVEMENT_
|
The "wise use" movement is
a coalition of corporate timber, livestock and mining interests whose
goal is the transfer of federal lands to state and private ownership as
a means of "getting government off our backs." It is similar to
the "Sagebrush Rebellion" of several years ago. One "wise use"
group (the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, based in
Washington state) has even stated that one of its objectives is "to
destroy the environmental movement." |
The Bush administration is
moving in the direction desired by these groups by: (1) Easing the
present restrictions on the use of public lands; (2) Preventing
environmentalists from using the courts in order to stop abusive uses
of public lands; (3) Opposing Congress' efforts to revise the 1872
Mining Act. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes so-called "wise use" programs which in reality
are subterfuges to permit the unwise
use of public lands for private profit, or which make it more difficult
for such activities to be effectively opposed. The Federation
supports the following pending bills in Congress which would counteract
some effects of the so-called "wise use" movement: (1) The Ancient
Forest Bill (S. 2895); (2) The Mining Reform Bill (HR 918); (3) The
Comprehensive Energy Bill (HR 776). |
The Federation opposes S
2762 which would permit extinction of the spotted owl. |
