FWOC RESOLUTION #12 |
_WOLF REINTRODUCTION INTO YELLOWSTONE PARK
AND NATIONAL FORESTS_
|
The Northern Rockies gray
wolf was listed as "endangered" in 1973 and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service was introduced to design a "recovery plan" to restore the wolf
to its former range. After fourteen years the Congress in October
1991 ordered the USFWS to complete a draft environmental impact
statement on wolf reintroduction by May 1993. |
Hearings on this matter
were held by the USFWS in August of 1992. Mining, timber and
certain western livestock interests have used these hearings as a forum
for their claim that endangered species protection is not important to
Americans. |
Wolf studies show that
wolves do not present a serious threat to the livestock industry.
Private funds exist to compensate ranchers for losses when proper proof
is presented. Wolves prey mainly on elk, deer and bison. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends: |
(A) that the DEIS by
the USFWS be finalized by the target date of May 1993, so that
reintroduction can proceed. |
(B) that wolves not
be limited to the Yellowstone National Park along, and |
(C) that the USFWS
go ahead with the 1987 Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery Plan which
the above-mentioned DEIS addresses. |
