FWOC RESOLUTION #13 |
_ABOLISH THE PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON
COMPETITIVENESS_
|
The Council on
Competitiveness was established by the President in 1989 to review
government regulations which might be removed because of placing undue
burdens on the nation's business. It meets without public notice,
issues no public reports on its actions, and because of its close
liaison with business, provides a second chance for business lobbyists
to thwart legislation they were unable to defeat in Congress. |
To date the council has
forestalled important Clean Air Act regulations, attempted to eliminate
protection for millions of acres of wetlands, killed EPA recycling
requirements for incinerators, blocked EPA ban on burning lead
batteries, degraded EPA regulations requiring municipal landfills to
install liners and water runoff systems, and intervened in a dispute as
to whether banks can be held liable for cleaning up hazardous waste on
property they have financed. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs calls for abolition of the President's Council on
Competitiveness and, short of this, that all public funding for this
quasi-governmental review group be withdrawn, with the requirement that
the source of any replacement funding be made known. In addition,
the Federation urges that any and all actions of the Council be made a
matter of public record and widely publicized. |
