FWOC RESOLUTION #16 |
_THE COLUMBIA RIVER HANFORD REACH_
|
The Hanford Reach (51
miles of undammed, undredged Columbia River between Wenatchee and the
Tri-Cities) is of local, regional and national importance because it is
the last Columbia River spawning grounds for Chinook salmon. It
is a habitat for bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and many other
waterfowl, and is the location of several archaeological sites. |
Opposition to Wild and
Scenic designation of the Hanford Reach is coming from adjacent private
property owners who are concerned about federal land restrictions,
easements or condemnations - which affect them only if they sell land
to the government. Private land makes up only 3% of the area
included in the proposed Wild and Scenic designation. |
Hearings on the Draft
Environmental Impact Statement for the Hanford Reach of the Columbia
River are now being held. Written comments are due no later than
October 9, 1992. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the Wild and Scenic classification for the
Hanford Reach. This resolution is offered as its comment on the
Draft Environmental Impact Statement and is being sent to Kristen
Sycamore, Recreation Division, National Park Service, 83 So. King,
Seattle, Wa 98104, with the request that it be included in the record. |
