FWOC RESOLUTION #20 |
_COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE_
|
The Columbia River Gorge
legislation passed by Congress in 1986 has failed to protect the
Columbia River Gorge. Acquisition authority can help to resolve
local resident issues. The U.S. Forest Service has not taken the
necessary steps to actually protect the Gorge in the following respects: |
1. Logging and
clear-cutting of the forests have increased.
|
2. No restoration of
fisheries, wildlife and natural areas has been made.
|
3. Excessive
residential development has been permitted and continues to be
permitted.
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends:
|
A. Public discussion
to resolve issues of managing the Columbia River Gorge, including
consideration of the National Park Service as the lead agency.
|
B. Provide
acquisition authority throughout the National Scenic area so that
zoning is not the only tool available to protect important places.
|
C. Provide more
protection for the Gorge's tributaries, which are especially important
to fisheries restoration.
