FWOC RESOLUTION #3 |
_CALIFORNIA DESERT PROTECTION ACT (S 21)_
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs has in the past supported the Californian Desert Protection Act sponsored by Sen. Alan Cranston, now numbers S 21. |
In March of 1992 the
administration had introduced a wilderness proposal for California (S
2392), Wallop (R-Wy) which is markedly weaker than the California
Desert Protection Act. For example, S 21 adds 1.3 million acres
to Death Valley National Monument and 234,000 acres to Joshua Tree
National Monument and redesignates them as national parks. The
Wallop bill adds only 103,800 acres to Death Valley and just 4,800
acres to Joshua Tree. |
The California Desert
Protection Act would give meaningful protection to the fragile desert
while the Wallop bill would perpetuate the spread of damage from
mining, overgrazing and unauthorized off-road vehicles. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs reaffirms its support for the Desert Protection Act and
encourages its members to contact their legislators and insist that
this bill be passed now. |
