FWOC RESOLUTION #4 |
_BRITISH COLUMBIA'S TATSHENSHINI RIVERS
WILDLANDS_
|
The Tatshenshini River in
British Columbia flows through 2.3 million acres of old growth forest,
the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The United States' Glacier
Bay National Park and the Alaska Bald Eagle Preserve lie downstream of
this area. |
The integrity of this land
is threatened by the intrusion of a proposed 70-mile road to
accommodate mining. |
Canadian law permits the
establishment of national parks by executive order and the opportunity
now exists for the newly elected British Columbia government, which ran
on a pro-environmental platform, to save the Tatshenshini wildlands by
designating the area as a national park. Such designation would
serve the best interests of both Canada and the United States. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs supports national park classification of the Tatshenshini
wildlands, and respectfully requests the Honorable Mike Harcourt,
Premier of British Columbia, to take appropriate action. |
