FWOC RESOLUTION #5 |
_ALASKA FISHING_
|
Glacier Bay National Park
ocean waters have been closed to commercial fishing since its creation
in 1925. This prohibition has never been enforced and illegal
fishing for profit in these waters has increased in recent years. |
The National Park Service
states that this prohibition includes "subsistence" fishing by
commercial fishermen, who retain only a small portion of the catch for
personal consumption. |
Bills have been introduced
in the Congressional Senate and House of Representatives to allow
"subsistence" and commercial fishing within the park boundaries by
passage of S 1624 and HB 3148. This would open the pristine
shoreline to commercial and residential fishing camps and would
increase commercial and cruise ship entries which are now exceeding the
levels allowed under the Endangered Species Act to protect whales and
shoreline animals. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes the passage of S 1624 and HB 3148 and requests
that the integrity of the park boundaries be maintained and properly
patrolled, and that the existing fishing prohibitions within this park
(as required by Park regulations) continue to be enforced. |
