FWOC RESOLUTION #6 |
_POLLUTION OF TRANSBORDER INLAND WATERS_
|
The Pacific coastal region
shared by the Province of British Columbia and the State of Washington
consists of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound and Georgia
Strait. These waters are rich in natural resources, especially
salmon and other marine life. |
All of these waters have
become highly polluted from industrial chemicals from mills and other
industries in both countries, from raw sewage of the city of Victoria,
and from agricultural and feedlot sources. |
"People for Puget Sound"
of Washington and "Save Georgia Strait Alliance" of Canada have formed
a transborder coalition to address this issue of common concern.
One of the actions taken by this coalition has been to petition the
International Joint Commission to make a study of these inland waters
and to provide recommendations for remedial action. |
The recent Earth Summit in
Rio de Janeiro highlighted the importance of international cooperation
in solving share environmental problems. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs endorses the program of this transboundary coalition and
calls upon Premier Mike Harcourt of British Columbia and Governor Booth
Gardner of Washington to also petition the International Joint
Commission to conduct this study and issue its recommendations. |
