FWOC RESOLUTION #8 |
_THE BODIE PROTECTION ACT OF 1992_
|
The historic Bodie gold
mining district in the State of California is the site of the largest
and best-preserved authentic ghost town in the Western United
States. Bodie was designated a national historical landmark in
1961 and a California State Historical Park in 1962. It is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places and is included in the
Federal Historic American Buildings survey. |
The town of Bodie is now
threatened by proposals to explore for and extract minerals form the
townsite and from surrounding lands. |
The Bodie Protection Act
of 1992, HR 4370, provides that all federal lands within the Bodie Bowl
area are not subject to location, entry and patent under the mining
laws of the Untied States, subject to valid existing rights, and
directs the Secretary of the Interior to consult with the governor of
the State of California before approving any mining activity plan
within the Bodie Bowl. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs supports HR 4370 (the Bodie Protection Act of 1992) and
urges its member clubs to contact their legislators and press for early
passage of this bill.* |
* A suitably prepared copy
of this resolution shall be presented to the Honorable Nick J. Rahall,
Chairman of the Congressional Subcommittee on Mining and Natural
Resources; Congressman Richard Lehman; and to the Save Bodie Committee. |
