FWOC RESOLUTION #15 |
_PROTECTION OF MONO LAKE, CALIFORNIA_
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs has long opposed the excessive water diversions from Mono Lake by the Los Angeles Department of Water and power. At its conventions in 1978, 1980 and 1981, the Federation adopted resolutions on the protection of Mono Lake. The State of California Water Resources Control Board has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to amend the L.A. Dept. of Water and Power's license to divert water from the Mono Basin. The EIR sets the minimum lake level at 6,390 feet, a level that should be maintained throughout the year. Water at the level of 6,390 feet would do the following: |
1. Restore streamside
wetlands and the lake itself as habitat for waterfowl populations.
|
2. Increase the
productivity of the brine shrimp and the alkali fly populations,
primary food sources for nesting and migratory bird populations;
|
3. Restore the
integrity of Negit Island and nearby small islets as a nesting
sanctuary for most of California's gull population;
|
4. Result in optimum
flows for Mono's tributary streams, thus maintaining fish populations;
|
5. Minimize lung
damaging dust storms and provide better recreational opportunities.
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs reaffirms its position on the protection of Mono Lake and
supports the proposed water level of 6,390 feet. The Federation
also urges the Water Board to recommend the Mono Lake as an Outstanding
National Resource Water to insure its protection in the future. |
