FWOC RESOLUTION #18 |
_NAFTA_
|
The North American Free
Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is designed to establish free trade among the
United States, Canada and Mexico. |
Laws for the protection of
the environment and for the working conditions of labor in Canada,
Mexico and the United States are not always in harmony.
Among the laws in the United States that could be subject to challenge
as illegal trade barriers are the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act,
the banning of log exports, laws restricting pesticide use, and
others. Furthermore, NAFTA may set up a situation where the
environmental or labor standards will be lowered, thus diminishing the
quality of life, the level of employment and the security of
social justice. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs proposes that the United States not ratify NAFTA until we
are assured that the environmental laws of each nation will not be
weakened. |
Copies of this resolution
shall be sent to President Clinton and to the Office of the United
States Trade Representative in Washington, D.C. The Convention
delegates are urged to send copies to their congressional
representatives. |
