FWOC RESOLUTION #5 |
_SALMON RESTORATION ON THE UPPER COLUMBIA
RIVER_
|
The need to restore salmon
and steelhead runs on the upper Columbia River and its tributaries
warrants a federal feasibility study as to how to bring this
about. New methods of encouraging fish runs now make this
technically possible. |
Salmon and steelhead have
lived in the upper Columbia River waters for more than 15,000 years
until the turn of this century when human structures -- dams -- on the
Spokane River and then on the Columbia stopped their return home to
spawn. |
It has been demonstrated
on Colville Tribal lands that step pools circumventing obstructions can
allow steelhead and salmon to return to their upstream spawning
habitats. Runs can be reestablished on the Sanpoil, Spokane,
Latah, and Kettle Rivers. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs requests (FWOC) requests that President Clinton authorize
the appropriate agency or agencies to conduct a technical feasibility
study looking towards the restoration of these fish runs on the Upper
Columbia River and its tributaries. |
