STATE GREEN-BELT FREEWAYS |
Question: |
||
Does this country need
more concrete walls for graffiti writers? Current highway
construction practices are for enormous concrete walls to be erected
along our freeways, instead of planting trees and shrubs. |
||
|
Concrete walls don't emit
oxygen, counteract toxic fumes, absorb heavy metals, nor add beauty to
our daily commutes. |
|
|
Trees do all these
beneficial things, and are also excellent sound barriers. |
|
One good example of this
is seen in the "Tree City" of Santa Barbara, California. |
||
An environmental study
should be able to weight the pros and cons of trees vs. concrete walls
as freeway barriers. |
||
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs urges its Members and Member Clubs to contact the state
Environmental Protection Agency about their conclusions on this matter,
and request that such studies be made, an applied to highway
construction standards. |
