SUPPORT OF THE ORIGINAL DESERT PROTECTION ACT |
Since 1987, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs has supported the California Desert Protection Act. This Act designates the establishment of three new National Parks in California that will protect some of our heritage of unique desert resources. | ||
A recent House of
Representative Amendment to this act downgrades 1.5 million acre Mojave
portion of the proposed Parks to National Preserve satus to permit
hunting in the area. The annual big game animal harvest in this
area is a mere 20 deer and 5 bighorn sheep. For a comparison, the
Director of the National Park Service has pointed out that this game
harvest is less than the number of deer killed by vehicles every year
on the George Washington Parkway in Washington, D.C. |
||
|
This Amendment was
instigated by the National Rifle Association, and was sponsored by
Republican Jerry Lewis; to who Californians owe NO thanks to for sponsoring this
useless and un-construcive amendment. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs calls for restoring the originally-conceived Desert
Protection Act Parks, and for rescinding the Lewis Amendment. |
||
The FWOC requests that
Members and Member Clubs contact their respective federal legislators,
and demand that the final legislation to establish the three National
Parks be as originally
proposed. |
