SAVING THE ANCIENT RAIN FORESTS OF CLAQOQUOT SOUND, BRITISH COLUMBIA

The British Columbia government has made a decision that would allow 74% of the ancient temperate rain forests of Clayoquot Sound to be clear-cut.  This logging would be primarily by MacMillan-Bledel, a national timber giant with possibly the worst corporate environmental record in Canada.  Fifty-six percent of the world's temperate rain forests have been logged, and half of the remaining temperate rain forests are in British Columbia.

Some of the trees in this forest are a thousand years old.  The reason for clear-cutting the Clayoquot Sound ancient rain forest is, in large part to supply wood for U.S. telephone directory companies such as Pacific Bell, GTE and ITT.  The B.C. government reportedly is the largest shareholder in MacMillan-Bloedel.  This is an irony, since the Provincial Government should be safeguarding its natural resources, not supporting their destruction.

Environmental activists met with Pacific Bell directory officials in San Francisco earlier this year to discuss the issue of Clayoquot Sound Rain Forest logging, and received a negative response from that corporation.

F.W.O.C. Members and Member Clubs are urged to write Pacific Bell (Pacific Bell Directory@101 Spear Street, San Francisco, CA, 94105, 1-800-848-8000) and demand that Pacific Bell stop purchasing directory paper or wood pulp resulting from logging the ancient temperate rain forests in British Columbia.

Members and Member Clubs are also urged to write the Premier of British Columbia, (The Honorable Michael Harcourt, Legislative Buildings, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada V8B 1X4, phone 604-387-1715) requesting that he rescind the provincial governments decision to authorize the clear-cutting of the ancient temperate rain forests of Claqoquot Sound.
