1997 FWOC Resolution
No. 18:
|
|
TO BAN METHYL BROMIDE
|
|
The strawberry industry
depends heavily on the use of the soil fumigant methyl bromide to
sterilize fields prior to planting. Methyl bromide is a known
carcinogen and ozone depletor. It directly affects the health of
the 20,000 strawberry pickers, as well as affecting the soil and
water. It is so dangerous to both human health and the
environment, that it was originally scheduled to be banned in
California in 1996, but because of heavy lobbying by the agricultural
industry, that effort was defeated. It is now scheduled to be
banned in the U.S. in the year 2001 and in the world by 2010. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs shares the concerns of the strawberry workers for their
health and the health of their environmental and strongly supports the
scheduled bans on methyl bromide without further delay and encourages
research for alternative solutions. |
