No. 22:
|
|
BOULDER WHITE CLOUD WILDERNESS AREA IN THE
SAWTOOTH NATIONAL FOREST
|
|
One of the first great
environmental battles in Idaho was over a huge open pit molybdenum mine
permit in the beautiful White Cloud Mountains. Protection was
achieved by the establishment of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area
(SNRA). The original proposed SNRA included 500,000 acres of
wilderness of the Boulder Mountains, but this was deferred by political
pressure from the mining industry until a mineral survey was complied
by the U.S. Forest Service. |
|
The Boulder Mountain
Mineral Survey has long since been completed, and there is little, if
any, mineralization. The SNRA is underfunded and
understaffed. Also, the boundaries of the SNRA should be expanded
to include the Pioneer Mountains and other areas recommended by the
Boulder-White Cloud Council and Idaho Alpine Club. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends that Idaho Senators Larry Craig and Dick
Kempthorne and Congressional Representatives, Michael Crapo and Helen
Chenoweth:
1. Support the establishment of the originally proposed 500,000 acres of SNRA. |
