1997 FWOC Resolution
No. 23:
|
|
PERMANENT CLOSURE OF A SECTION OF HELLS CANYON
ROAD
|
|
Senator Gordon Smith and
Representative Bob Smith currently are proposing that a 6 1/2 mile
section of a U.S. Forest Service dirt road at the edge of the Hells
Canyon National Recreation Area, now being reclaimed by wild flowers
and grasses, be reopened to motor vehicle traffic. If this road
is reopened, this important habitat for elk calving and the migration
route for deer and elk and other wildlife will be threatened. The
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife support keeping the road
closed. Ranchers have joined with conservationists in opposing
the paving of this overgrown trail. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes the reopening of the 6 1/2 mile section of U.S.
Forest Service road at the edge of Hells Canyon Recreation Area and
supports its continued closure for the preservation of important
wildlife habitat. |
