No. 8:
|
|
PRESERVATION OF THE GIANT SEQUOIA GROVES
|
|
About half of the
existing Giant Sequoia Groves, found only in the southern Sierra Nevada
of California, are located in the Sequoia National Forest.
Contrary to most people's perceptions, less than half of the groves are
protected in National Parks. In the past, the Forest Service has
logged some of these groves leaving only giant specimen trees
surrounded by clearcuts. Environmentalists have been able to stop
the logging inside the groves, but the Forest Service still intends to
log the surrounding forests. Giant Sequoia Groves are part of the
larger ecosystem found in the surrounding conifer forests. The
groves cannot survive with only lines drawn around the outermost trees
without regard to what goes on in the forests around them. Past
logging has severely impacted the surrounding forest and continued
logging as proposed by the Forest Service could make it impossible for
the groves to survive as we know them today. |
|
Congressman George Brown
has introduced HR 2077 which would set aside over 300,000 acres as a
Preserve in Sequoia National Forest. The purpose of the Preserve
is to protect the Giant Sequoia Groves, protect and restore the
surrounding forests, promote recreation on the area and stop all
logging and road building inside the proposed Preserve. It would
also add about 170,000 acres of roadless areas in the Sequoia National
Forest to the Wilderness System. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports protection of the Giant Sequoia Groves and
surrounding forest and endorses legislation (HR 2077) to establish
Giant Sequoia Grove Preserve in the Sequoia National Forest. |
