1998 FWOC Resolution No. 12:
|
|
Permanent Moratorium on Roads in Roadless Areas
|
|
In the spring of 1998,
Mike Dombeck, Chief of the Forest Service, imposed a temporary
moratorium on building new roads in roadless areas, except in Alaska
and the Pacific Northwest. This moratorium is useful in
eliminating unnecessary and undesirable roadbuilding but does not go
far enough. There are already 380,000 miles of roads in our
national forests, more then eight times the length of our interstate
highway system. Roadbuilding pollutes our streams by causing soil
erosion and damages wildlife and fish habitat. |
|
Because of the damage to
the environment caused by roadbuilding, and because our roadless areas
are a precious resource for wildlife, the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports a permanent moratorium on roadbuilding in all
roadless areas, including the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. |
