1998 FWOC Resolution No. 14:
|
|
Further Development on Mt. Hood
|
|
In 1989 Mt. Hood Meadows
Ski Resort was granted permission by the U.S. Forest Service to expand
its winter skiing operation to a year-round resort. This
permission was put on hold because the Environmental Impact Statement
did not address the question of affected Indian sacred grounds.
The Meadows has returned with their original request, somewhat
modified, and the Forest Service has again granted a permit.
Environmental organizations, spearheaded by Friends of M t. Hood,
appealed the decisions, lost, and filed suite, alleging that
degradation of alpine meadows, including water pollution would
occur. Increased development would expand the resort by 96 acres,
to allow for parking, new ski lifts, and a restaurant overlooking the
Timberline Trail. Summer usage could bring as many as 1500
visitors per day, resulting in far more impact on the land than in the
winter when it is snow-covered. |
|
Because of the need to
preserve alpine meadows, glacial streams, and wetlands -- a vital
source of pure water --, the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes further development at Mt. Hood Meadows. |
