1998 FWOC Resolution No. 19:
|
|
Invasive Weeds - A Major Threat to the American
Landscape
|
|
Invasive plants are those
that have been introduced into an environment in which they did not
evolve. "This invasion has created a level of destruction to
America's environment and economy that is matched only by floods,
earthquakes, hurricanes, and mudslides," states Bruce Babbitt,
Secretary of the Interior. |
|
According to a recent
Dept. of Interior survey, noxious weeds are invading western wildlands
at a rate estimated to be nearly 5000 acres per day. Pat Shea,
director of the Bureau of Land Management, says that "Western wildlands
and deserts are an important part of our biological heritage and need
to be protected from invasive non-native plants" |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs views with alarm the spread of these invasive plants. |
