1998 FWOC Resolution No. 20:
|
|
Genetic Diversity of Pacific Salmon
|
|
One goal of the Federation
of Western
Outdoor Clubs is to maintain the genetic diversity of Pacific salmon
stocks in perpetuity. The problem with the various restoration
and recovery programs is that we are losing genetic diversity that has
dramatic implications for the future existence of these species. |
|
The Pacific Salmon Treaty
is an international treaty between Canada and the U.S. to determine the
annual allocation of Pacific Salmon caught. However, the
participants in the treaty have not reached agreement in the last six
years so it has not helped conservation efforts. |

|
ACTION: The FWOC request member
groups and members to urge Canada and the U.S. to negotiate a new
Treaty organized around fundamental principles of conservation, with
dispute mechanisms to prevent the failure of the pact. |
