1998 FWOC Resolution No. 5:
|
|
Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument
|
|
The newly created Grand
Staircase - Escalante National Monument in Utah is awaiting a
management plan. Designation of the Monument did not
automatically give the public land within its boundaries any greater
protection than they had before. Nearly 1.3 million acres of
proposed wilderness in the Monument should be managed as wilderness
until Congress passes the pending "America's Redrock Wilderness Act"
(HR-1500 and S-773). The Bureau of Land Management has been
unwilling to manage the Monument during this interim period for
wilderness values and has even decided to allow Conoco to drill for oil
within its boundaries. The FWOC strongly opposes commercial
development within the Monument. |

ACTION: The FWOC urges member clubs
and members to write to the Bureau of Land Management and to their
Congressional Representatives asking that the Monument be managed for
its wilderness values until legislation is passed and that no
commercial development be allowed. |
