1998 FWOC Resolution No. 7:
|
|
Restoration of Walker Lake, Nevada
|
|
Walker Lake, one of the
few ancient Pleistocene remnant lakes in the West, is severely
threatened by upstream diversions on the Walker River for irrigation
purposes. The lake level has dropped almost 90 feet within the
past 70 years and may soon be too alkaline to support the population of
Lahontan cutthroat trout which provides a world-class fishery in the
middle of the Nevada desert. The Walker Lake Working fishery in
the middle of the Nevada desert. The Walker Lake Working Group, a
coalition of environmentalists, fishermen, and civic leaders, has been
looking for solutions to save the lake, including working with the
Bureau of Land Management in their attempt to buy up water rights from
willing sellers and exploring legal remedies similar to the precedent
established when Mono Lake was ruled to be a public trust resource. |
|
Because of the importance
of restoring Walker Lake, a jewel of the desert and a first-class
fishery, the Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the efforts of the Walker Lake Working Group to
ensure a viable supply of fresh water from the Walker River
system. |
