Resolution
#10: Hydropower Re-Licensing
|
|
The re-licensing of many
dams is coming up for consideration by the Federal Energy
Regulator Commission (FERC) due to approaching expiration of the
original license periods. FERC must consider the conflicting
issues of the benefits/drawbacks of hydropower dams (e.g. hydroelectric
power generation, irrigation, flat-water recreation) vs. effect on
fisheries, wildlife, and other aspects of environmental effects.
Allocation of funding for FY 2001 concerning re-licensing of hydropower
dams involves the following Federal agencies: FERC, US Forest Service,
US Fish and Wildlife Service, BLM Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the
National Marine Fisheries Service. FERC and USFS have requested a
total of %75 million FY 2001 for this purpose. |
|
ACTION: FWOC urges the
appropriation of sufficient funding in FY 2001 to ensure adequate
investing of the merits of each case. Members and member clubs
are urged to contact their Senators and Representatives requesting
adequate funding for FERC and affected agencies. |
