Resolution
#12: Buckhorn Mountain Gold Mine
|
|
The Battle Mountain Gold
Company proposes to convert Buckhorn Mountain (in Okanagan County,
Washington) into a permanent 118-acre pit, a toxic lake, a 100-acre
cyanide-soaked tailings, pile, and 300 acres of acid-generating waste
rock. The purpose is to extract gold, a non-essential
mineral. During the anticipated 10 year operation, secondary
human health damage and environmental damage due to road building,
traffic, surface water runoff and ground water contamination, are also
expected. A recent legislative rider authored by Senator Slade
Gorton would exempt the company from the 5-acre limitation imposed by
the 1872 Mining Law, thus allowing this destructive project to proceed. |
|
ACTION: FWOC reaffirms its
1995 Resolution #13 opposing the Buckhorn Mountain mining project, and
opposes the Gorton Rider. We call on Washington state agencies,
Congress and the Administration to use all their powers to prevent this
project. |
