Resolution
#13: Preservation of Hells Canyon National Recreational Area
|
|
Oregon and Idaho share
pride in majestic Hells Canyon through which the Snake River
flows. This centerpiece of the Columbia Basin 'contains most of
the key biological component habitats found across the greater Pacific
Northwest. The Canyon has a rich history of human and geological
interest, and was given special protection by Congress in 1975.
The magnitude of the Canyon and its ecological importance necessitates
an exceptional need for complete and unconditional consideration of all
future human impacts in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area and
surrounding lands. In recent well publicized issues of wilderness
and wildlife protection -- logging and livestock grazing have been a
constant and ever-threatening compromise to the ecological and
wilderness integrity of this vast and crucial area. |
|
The FWOC views the
continued degradation of the mandated protection of Hells Canyon as a
compromise of our cherished history and of the wealth of biological
diversity that should be protected at all costs. The FWOC
supports the adoption of the Native Ecosystem Recovery Alternative for
the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area Comprehensive Management
Plan. The FWOC also supports the designation of the Hells
Canyon/Chief Joseph National Preserve to be managed by the National
Parks Service. |
