Resolution
#16: Steens Mountain Area
|
|
The magnificent Steens
Mountain area in southeast Oregon continues to be degraded by livestock
grazing. The area deserves designation as a National Park
comparable to Great Basin National Park in Nevada. The private
lands within the Steens Mountain area should be purchased using grants
from the Land and Water Conservation Fund as they become
available. Grazing should be phased out. |
|
National Monument
designation could also be considered for this area, providing it is
administered by the National Park Service. |
|
The FWOC supports and
endorses efforts to create a Steens Mountain National Park (or National
Monument) and to purchase key in-holding properties as they become
available. Grazing of livestock should be phased out as soon as
possible in all park lands. |
|
ACTION: Write your
Senators and Representatives in Congress asking for establishment of a
Steens Mountain National Park or National Monument. |
