Resolution
#26: Taku Watershed
|
|
The Taku River watershed
is located in Northwestern British Columbia and is the largest
unprotected, unfragmented river drainage on the Pacific Coast of North
America. It flows into Alaska, near Juneau. The watershed
is rich in wildlife such as grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyote,
lynx, mountain goats, sheep, and it is the largest salmon producer in
Southeast Alaska and Northern British Columbia. |
|
Cominco Ltd. used to
operate a mine, now called Tulsequah Chief, on the Taku River.
Cominco has sold the mine to Redfern Resources, which plans to reopen
the mine. Redfern Resources plans to build a new road to the mine
from Atlin, British Columbia. The road would have long term
negative impacts beyond the life of the mine. The Environmental
Assessment Process has failed to address the potential impacts facing
the Taku watershed if a 160 km road is constructed to access the
Tulsequah Chief Mine. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs urges the British Columbia Government to reject Redfern
Resource's proposal to build a new road into the Taku watershed. |
