Resolution
#3: Mitigation Measures for Owens Valley
|
|
Early in this Century the
City of Los Angeles diverted water from Owens Lake in rural Inyo
County, eventually draining the lake. Owens Valley is now an
ecological nightmare, as the 110 square miles of the Owens lake-bed has
become one of America's worst pollution problem areas. When winds
blow along the dry lake-bed, clouds of arsenic-ladened dust are spread
throughout Inyo, Kern and San Bernardino counties. These polluted
dust storms pose a serious health threat to area residents and
habitat. Los Angeles admitted responsibility for this man-made
pollution last year, but city officials are not moving fast enough to
meet the established federal deadlines. |
|
The FWOC supports
California SB-136 which would require the City of Los Angeles to move
quickly to mitigate the severe dust pollution problem that it created,
thus guaranteeing that the Owens valley area will meet air quality
standards by the established Federal deadlines. |
