#30: Free-Flowing Snoqualmie Falls
|
|
The Snoqualmie Falls near
Seattle in Washington State is the central sacred site of the
Snoqualmie Tribal Peoples. In the past, many of the Northwest
Tribes traveled to the Falls for spiritual practices. About 100
years ago Puget Sound Power company installed a weir above the Falls,
which diverted all the water at certain hours to produce
electricity. The Tribe believes that the mist that rises sends
prayers up to the Creator. The Snoqualmie People want to see the
Falls flowing freely for all people for all time. Many non-Native
people come to the Falls and feel a one-ness with Nature and renewal in
their own spiritual way. The Falls is the second most visited
attraction in Washington State and only 0.7 percent of Puget Sound
Power's electrical energy is generated by the Falls. The Army
Corps of Engineers now supports the removal of the weir at the Falls. |

The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the removal of the weir at Snoqualmie Falls. |
