Resolution
#32: Washington State's National Forests
|
|
Washington state is
blessed with an outstanding National Forest heritage. However, of
Washington's nine million acres of National Forest, only about one
quarter has been protected as Wilderness Areas. The remaining
three fourths of Washington's National Forest provide healthy
watersheds for humans as well as habitat essential to the health of
salmon, trout, bear, lynx, caribou, gray wolf and many other animal and
plant species. Special places like the Kettle River Range, Dark
Divide, Abercrombie-Hooknose, North Fork Entiat, Golden Horn, Eagle
Rock and Upper Skokomish are highly valued by the public due to their
wilderness characteristics. Such unprotected National Forest
areas continually are threatened by clearcut logging, road construction
and other forms of development. |
|
The Wild Washington
Campaign is a grassroots effort to protect National Forest lands in
Washington state. Washington's population is projected to double
in the next 50 years, resulting in increased demand for wilderness
recreation. Developers also will compete for access to
Washington's National Forest resources. |
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs endorses Wild Washington Campaign's efforts to safeguard Washington's National Forests as Wilderness Areas. Further, we will call upon President Clinton, Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck, and the Washington Congressional delegation to take all steps necessary to protect this priceless heritage. | |
